Welcome to Navarro County

 

Navarro County was created by Texas Legislature in 1846 and was named after Texas Patriot Jose Antonio Navarro. The county seat, Corsicana, was formed from a 100 acres site selected by a legislative committee in 1846. Corsicana was name after Corsicana the homeland of the father of Jose Antonio Navarro. Navarro county lies in the North Central portion of Texas.

Oil and agriculture were the mainstays of economic development until the mid 1980's when manufacturing, distribution and food processing diversified the source of economic development. The agricultural economy is diverse with income split between livestock, crop, wildlife and horticulture enterprises. Cow-calf, stocker cattle, horse production and wild games animals account for the primary sources of animal agriculture while crop income is derived from cotton, sorghum, wheat, corn, pecans and herbs.

Navarro County is recognized for the longest continuous oil flow in Texas with over 200 million barrels produced since 1895. Other minerals include sand and gravel.

Business income resources include diversified manufacturing, agribusinesses, oil field operations and distribution.

Recreation in Navarro County include the Richland Chambers Creek Reservoir, Navarro Mills Lake, Pioneer Village, Warehouse Living Arts Center, the Cook Center for Arts, Science and Technology, historic sites and homes. Major events including the Navarro County Youth Exposition, the Derrick Days Celebration, Day in November Arts and Crafts Exhibit and Tour de Flowers provide annual recreational and entertainment opportunities.

Other attractions of Navarro County include the world famous Collin Street Bakery, Navarro College, russel Stover Candy Company and Navarro Regional Hospital.

In 1990, the population of Navarro County was 39,926. Demographically, projections for Navarro County in the year 2000 showed a population of 44,269 and 11% increase from 1990. In 1997, Navarro County ranked 62 among Texas' 254 counties in population. Over 42% of the Navarro County population is between the ages of 15 and 44. 16% of the County population is 65 or older. The population is comprised of Anglo 70%, Black 18.6% and Hispanic 9.4%

Navarro Counties total per capita income in 1996 was $735,506. the County ranks 63rd in the state and accounted for 0.2% of the State total. The estimated median household income is $26,122. Navarro County, like other counties in Texas, is concentrating on growing a strong educational system and developing a strong economy that will prepare its citizens and children for the 21st century.
